It's almost end of 2015 (half way through December). Everyone seemed to be buzzed about the year 2016 as everyone have started to prepare the new fresh year. While people are getting ready for the new year of 2016, I thought it was about time to refresh and give my website a fresh and new updates. And after struggling for few weeks (and months) I finally was able to pull off the important part and make few parts of the site bit better. I hope you enjoy my newly-modelled site.
Disclaimer - The site will be constantly updated in the future as well. Hence if you see any changes which differs from this post, please disregard.
While developing my new site, I tried not to get away too far from my previous looks and feel from my site (style inspired by Minimally Minimal), but I also wanted to make sure that I incorporate my personal taste and style of Design. Till now, I was too focused on Andrew Kim's design language, almost being trapped by his style which made me difficult to create my site into my own personal taste with satisfaction. It was important for me step back for a moment and take some risks for my design language. Hence I decided to develop my website in a slow pace, so that I can control and develop the details while maintaining the minimalistic approach that I did for my site at the beginning.
Hence you might see few bits of my site twitching and changing while navigating the site in few months from now. Don't worry. It's all part of my development for the website, and I will make sure that the changes won't be made until the development for the site is 100% decisive.
I hope you enjoy my site as much as I do, and again, thank you for visiting.
Below is a post about the process for my website development (in words only). You may read them for better understanding of philosophy and background foundation for my website.
There are two statement which my website should follow:
- My website should be easy and pleasing to be navigated.
- There should be things that explains the website in one glance.
As you can see, two of the factors all ponder the theme of user experience and the importance of the convenient use of the website. Many website that I've seen on the web are sometimes difficult to follow and navigate (and often get lost). I always hoped there was a website which explains what is what and where is where, able to understand the purpose and the usage of the website easily.
In order to clarify my usage and user experience for my website effectively, I realised I need to set a purpose for my website. I started to ask myself the very core purpose of my site's existence, why do I even need a website and why should my website be existed. I believed tackling the very core value of a subject is the most fundamental thing that you have to do, realising that now is the time I need to start focusing more on my personal branding as an artist and a designer.
Core Values and Branding
What is the purpose of my website? Why is my site necessary to be online?
This is the questions that I tackled at the very beginning stage of my website development. I believe it is fundamental to start focusing on the core values of anything we do. I realised that if I don't get the core values straight, everything else will eventually fall apart or be loose. Hence it was important to start contemplating on the question of the core necessity of the purpose for my website. Why do I need my website?
While I was brainstorming the ideas, I decided to jot down some honest reasons why I started my website in first place. As I was listing them , I realised the list was categorised into two groups: personal and philosophical.
The personal purpose of my website is sharing. I believe it is vital to share who you are as a person, what you do, what thoughts you have in your mind and what philosophical and artistic values you share to other people.
At the beginning, when I started my website, I realised the main philosophical purpose of my site was (and still is) the ability to record. Being able to record or make a documentation of something was one of the very important part of human history. Though human lifespan is quite short, it was in my heart that able to record things that I've done in my past is vital for my personal development and even for other people.
As I organised my thoughts about the two core values of my site, I decided to make these traits as the fundamental aspect of the new site as well and the absolute values for my future development.
My website should be easy and pleasing to be navigated. One of the powerful things that design can do is that it can make the user feel they want to use the product again and again - it binds the product with the user intimately in a way that it creates a relationship between each other.
With my personal appreciation for minimalism, I decided develop my website so that the website is more simplified and easier for the users to navigate. I personally think that the aesthetic of the website might not fully elaborate my appreciation for minimalism, however I thought it is the necessary step for me in order to develop more personal and better website. In the future, there will definite and more sophisticated integration of minimalism, hence you can think this is the stepping of my website development for the future.
Considering the purpose and the user experience for my site, I decided to organise my website into three parts:
Blog is a place where my works, thoughts, and life (journal) is represented in a timeline view. This place focuses the posts about my thoughts as the most important followed by the work and my life.
Work is a place where my daily work and projects are curated. The work is divided into 3 main categories, which is again, divided into more subcategories. The most important part of the work area is that
The work is separated into three parts:
Work - majority of my quick sketches small doodles, blender works, everything that I do which is not official goes here. This place shows everything from unfinished to finished as long as it is not official. Currently, I am focusing on: Blender Architecture/ Interior Architecture, Sketches. I am studying Concept Art and Motion Graphics and portfolios will be uploaded soon. I am planning to do 소설(Written Novel) in the future.
Projects - This is gem and jewels of my work. This is ‘official’ work that I have done in School or something that is influential to the world and the community. The portfolio here has meaning within themselves. I wouldn’t say this is the Hall of Fame from the Work, however, it could come up here if it has meaning into it.
External Projects - Just as it is written. This place is where all of my External work (curated, commissions etc).
This place is where my daily routine is posted. Majority of the post will include my travels, visit to a unique place etc. I won't be posting any random post without any theme, each post will be small bit of meaning to it.
There is no freedom without any rules. As I decided to make sharing and recording as my two core value for my website, I realised in order to complete the branding for my website, I need to make sure there is a strong design language which is followed throughout the whole website.
In this part, I decided to approach three main design aspect of the website: Colour Scheme, Design Style, and Typeface. This development is only a beginning for my site's future development, hence there will be more design factors added to the list in the future.
The Colour Scheme for my website should be consistent throughout the whole site. Here are main colours that I should be using:
- Pastel Colours
The colours are mainly based on the development from minimalistic style.
The site has to be minimal and elegant - (sometimes playful. This playfulness could be illustrate with written wordings or work, however the playfulness should not be done by incorporating casual and low quality images easily found throughout the web.) This site is focused on my personal branding. Hence it should follow my honest design values such as Minimalism, Orientalism, Atmospheric approach and Organisation from Korean Design.
Orientalism - If the work or a post consists of Korean/ Japanese or other oriental style within their work, they style should encompass the Korean design language.
Typeface must be consistent throughout the whole site as well, plus it being ease to be used and free. Here are few lists of typefaces which should be integrated in certain situations:
Blog - Palatino Linotype (ENG)
Work - For design purposes, fonts such as PROXIMA NOVA, ARIAL NEXT, ROBOTO, AVENIR NEXT, HELVETICA NEUE, APPLE BRAILLE, TAHOMA, GOTHAM.
For written work, Palatino Linotype is recommended.
External Projects - Typeface for external Project depends on the meaning and the concept behind the project.
